Share your photos of the San Antonio River Basin
Spring is here! With the warmer temperatures, native plants are in bloom, the pollinators are pollinating, and wildlife is on the move. It’s a great time to get out and enjoy nature in the San Antonio River Basin! This year also marks the 10 year anniversary of the opening of the San Antonio River Walk Museum Reach! The San Antonio River Authority (River Authority) wants to encourage you to get out and enjoy the beauty of the Museum Reach, as well as the entire San Antonio River Basin, and share your photos with us.
The River Authority is seeking photo submissions for a photo contest intended to help capture unique aspects of the San Antonio River Basin, as well as the San Antonio River Walk Museum Reach success story. Winning photographs will come from the following categories:
- Creeks and Rivers
- Special Category – San Antonio River Walk Museum Reach
- Judges’ Choice for Best Photograph from Bexar County
- Judges’ Choice for Best Photograph from Wilson County
- Judges’ Choice for Best Photograph from Karnes County
- Judges’ Choice for Best Photograph from Goliad County
- People’s Choice – You can help select this category. Online voting for the People’s Choice will occur May 27 – June 7.
From March 8 through May 12, by submitting your photos below, you will be helping to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the opening of the San Antonio River Walk Museum Reach as well as the entire San Antonio River Basin. You’ll also have a chance to win prize packages!

2 – Go outside! Visit the San Antonio River Walk Museum Reach or any other locations around the San Antonio River or its tributaries (in Bexar, Wilson, Karnes or Goliad counties) and take photos that will fit into one of the submission categories.
3 – Beginning March 8th – Upload your photos to the contest for a chance to win

To help kickoff the contest, free photography workshops given by Landers Photography School will be available to the public in March. See below for the dates and locations and get tips from the pros on how to take the best pictures on your phone and/or camera!

The San Antonio River Authority is organizing a photo contest in celebration of the entire San Antonio River Basin. This year also marks the 10 year anniversary of the opening of the San Antonio River Walk Museum Reach! The Photo Contest begins March 8, 2019, and ends May 12, 2019, at 5 P.M. Central Standard Time.
Who may enter:
The Contest is open to the community. Individuals affiliated with the San Antonio River Authority, including employees, Board members, or interns are not eligible for any prize. The San Antonio River Authority will determine winners’ eligibility in its sole discretion.
What to enter:
The following contest categories are drawn from subjects of special interest to the San Antonio River Authority. To be eligible for any category, a photograph must have been shot by the entrant within the last two years. The photograph must be taken in Bexar, Wilson, Karnes, or Goliad County.
- Creeks & Rivers: Images that include creeks within the four county jurisdiction or the San Antonio River.
- Recreation: Images capturing the use and enjoyment of creeks or rivers within the San Antonio River watershed including but not limited to walking or running on the trail, paddling, fishing, cycling, or picnicking.
- Animals: Images capturing native wildlife in their habitat.
- Plants: Images capturing plant life or pollinators and insects.
- Special Category – Museum Reach 10th Anniversary: Images capturing any of the above categories within the San Antonio River Walk Museum Reach section on the San Antonio River between Lexington Ave. and Josephine St.
- Student: Submissions from contestants under the age of 18. *Parent or guardian consent is required. A waiver must be submitted at the time of entry.
Cropped photos are eligible in all categories. We do not accept digitally or otherwise enhanced or altered photos. Minor adjustments, including spotting, dodging and burning, sharpening, contrast and slight color adjustment or the digital equivalents are acceptable for all categories. If the judges determine that a photographer has substantially altered his or her photo, they reserve the right to disqualify it.
How to enter:
Please submit photographs and requested information online through our website at sara-tx.org/photocontest. Each photo that is submitted must be different and duplicate images will be considered ineligible. In order to be displayed in our online gallery without being stretched or distorted, photographs must be submitted in .jpg, .jpeg, or .gif format, edited for web in sRGB color space, at least 2,000 pixels wide and no larger than 10 MB. Images must not be watermarked. You must complete a separate form for each photo submitted.
We do not accept photographs submitted through the mail. High-quality scans of non-digital photographs are acceptable. Digital photographs should be taken at the highest resolution possible.
Finalists may be asked to submit an original, unedited digital file. THE RIVER AUTHORITY reserves the right to disqualify incomplete entries and/or contestants who are unable to submit, upon request, a high-resolution photograph of at least 300 dpi at 3,000 pixels. Mobile photographs are exempt from this size requirement, but must be submitted at their highest resolution upon request.
You retain your rights to your photograph; however, by entering the contest, you grant THE RIVER AUTHORITY and the San Antonio River Foundation (and those authorized by THE RIVER AUTHORITY) a royalty-free, world-wide, perpetual, non-exclusive license to publicly display, distribute, modify, reproduce and create derivative works of the entries, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or later developed, for any THE RIVER AUTHORITY purpose, including, but not limited to, advertising and promotion, exhibition, and commercial products, including but not limited to THE RIVER AUTHORITY publications. Any photograph reproduced will include a photographer credit as feasible. THE RIVER AUTHORITY will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses.
Photos that violate or infringe upon another person’s rights, including but not limited to copyright, are not eligible.
Photos that contain sexually explicit, nude, obscene, violent or other objectionable or inappropriate content, as determined by THE RIVER AUTHORITY in its sole discretion, are ineligible for all categories of this contest.
For a photo in which a person is recognizable, you must provide an image release from the subject or, in the case of a minor, the subject’s parent or guardian to THE RIVER AUTHORITY at the time of entry. The release is available below.
By submitting an entry, each contestant agrees to the rules of the contest and states that he or she is 18 years old or older. If a contestant is under the age of 18 parent consent is required and a waiver must be submitted at the time of entry. The waiver is available below.
The contest begins on March 8, 2019. All entries must be received through sara-tx.org by 5 P.M. Central Standard Time on May 12, 2019.
Photo entries will be judged based on creativity, quality, originality, responsiveness to the prompt, and overall impact.
A panel of judges will select photos from each category to be displayed on the San Antonio River Authority website and be voted on by the public. The photo that receives the most votes will win the People’s Choice category.
Judges will then select one overall winner from each individual category. Judges will also select one “Judge’s Best” photo from Bexar, Wilson, Karnes, and Goliad county. Winners will be notified of their status in June 2019
THE RIVER AUTHORITY will notify winners via the contact information provided at the time of entry; THE RIVER AUTHORITY may disqualify anyone who fails to respond to the notification within five business days. Winners will be recognized at the Environmental Film Fest taking place in Bexar and Goliad Counties, featured in the River Authority’s September issue of the River Reach, and featured at the Witte Museum’s “Fotoseptiembre” event.

Conditions of Entry
INDEMNIFICATION: All entrants hold the Sponsors and their respective directors, officers, employees, interns, research associates, and volunteers (the “Indemnified Parties”) harmless from and against all claims of any nature arising in connection with entrant’s participation in the contest and acceptance or use of a prize. The Indemnified Parties are not liable for any costs, damages, injuries, or other claims incurred as a result of entrants’ participation in the contest or winner’s acceptance and usage of a prize. The Indemnified Parties are not responsible for incomplete or misdirected entries, technical or network malfunctions or failures, or causes beyond their control. Entrants are solely responsible for their entries. Entrants may not submit materials that introduce any software viruses, worms or other programs designed to damage software, hardware or telecommunications equipment or are off-topic, partisan-political, contain advertising, nudity, personal attacks or expletives, or is otherwise abusive, threatening, unlawful, harassing, discriminatory, libelous, obscene, false, sexually explicit, or that infringes on the rights of any third party.
The contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law. THE RIVER AUTHORITY reserves the right to cancel the contest or modify these rules at its discretion. THE RIVER AUTHORITY reserves the right to award or not award the prizes in its sole discretion. THE RIVER AUTHORITY reserves the right to disqualify any entrant whose entry or conduct appears in any way to: inhibit the enjoyment of others; tamper with the competition; violate these rules or other applicable law or regulation; infringe on the rights of third parties; or act in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. The RIVER AUTHORITY shall determine entry eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion. Decisions of THE RIVER AUTHORITY are final and binding.
